The Secret of Dying - June 13, 2010
Ordination is one of those odd words that you encounter, if you encounter it at all, mostly in church. It is the act of “appointing, setting aside for a special service, investing with the responsibility for church leadership.” Today we ordain elders and deacons. As the form for ordination says, we believe that in the call of the congregation, God also calls these men and women to lead and care for the church. We remind ourselves that the Spirit of God works through ordinary people to accomplish his purpose.
It is this grace that is celebrated and preached in the passage from Galatians that is at the center of our worship today. The Apostle says, “The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). It is by this grace that we live and serve.
