Two hundred and thirty four years later these words written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted on this date by the Continental Congress still have the power to stir our souls. They aspire to a vision of nationhood and government so lofty that no nation, including our own, has ever achieved them, and yet they continue to remind us as a nation to press on towards these goals.

Today we set these words from our national history in the context of scripture in a message entitled, “Pride and Patriotism.” As you prepare for the reading of the word, reflect for a few moments on pride, the good kind of pride: What do you take pride in? What’s at the center of your life?
